I had to put my corporate hat back on these last few months working on hubby's new office. I was a bit rusty but got back into the swing of things pretty fast. I collaborated with another designer friend and we had lots of fun working on the project. I think it turned out pretty darn well, even on our limited budget.
Now that the project is over and everyone is moved in and happily working away in their new environment, I took the opportunity to get away for a week-long fiber intensive with the Golden Gate Fiber Institute. I had wonderful six full days in a rigid heddle weaving class and a fiber felting class.
The fiber felting class was taught by Sharon Costello who is known for her illuminated felted sculpture. This is my lampshade, wet felted (look, no seams Mom!) merino wool embedded with silk threads, bits of silk fiber, and strips of silk sateen fabric. The added bonus was that I learned how to wire a lamp.
With Syne Mitchell, I finally learned how to warp my rigid heddle loom all on my own as well as how to weave more complex patterns than good old plain weave. The sampler above shows just a few of the more complex weaves that can be done on the rigid heddle.
These are three bookmarks that are all woven on the same warp, but look very different when woven with different weft threads.
This scarf was my favorite project of the week. It's made with hand-painted sock yarn and it's so soft and drapey. I've got big plans for my rigid heddle loom and all the wonderful hand-painted sock yarn I've managed to

Gah! Another yarn sport I have yet to try.
The office looks incredible! Very chic. (sheek?) How does one spell that...
I had no idea you were such a gifted weaver. And the lampshade - one of a kind.
Wow wow wow!! Love the new office! Congratulations on a job well done!
And I can't wait to hear more about the fiber institute. Love your projects! So glad you are learning to spin and weave first...it'll make it easier for me, right?
That scarf...gorgeous!
Welcome back to blogland!! You were missed! :)
Hubby's office looks spectacular, I didn't know that you also wore an interior design hat...I'm not in the least surprised!
Your weaving and felting are wonderful!! You are one clever and creative cupcakefaerie, to be sure!! :)
Glad you're back!!
Sounds like that was a great week! Love the lampshade! I had no idea you could do that with fiber! Your scarf is truly beautiful too. It looks so soft and cozy :-)
You beat me. I've been working on a blog post for GGFI, but now iWeb has bombed or is corrupted or something. So much time, so little time!!! GRRRRR.
Great job! Love the office; love the fiber.
All so wonderful! Even rusty, your design eye is always right on! And the fiber world....I am seriously wanting a loom now....I have had Great Grandmother's out for years (not usable, just art now).....and it would help the sock yarn move along.....the lampshade is way cool!
oh wow! All of that fiber-y goodness! I love the lampshade - so cool. And the weaving looks so beautiful. And fast!
